What are the Lincolnshire Wolds?
The Lincolnshire Wolds are a range of hills running roughly parallel to the North Sea Coast from the Humber to the Fens; they are the highest land in eastern England between Yorkshire and Kent. In fact, the spot known as Wolds Top is the highest point in the whole of Lincolnshire - just north of the village of Normanby le Wold, it is approximately 551 feet or 168 metres above sea level. Since 1973, the Lincolnshire Wolds have officially been an Area of Outstanding Beauty - or AONB.
The Wolds area - and it covers 560 square kilometers - is rural. There are several small market towns to visit like Alford and Market Rasen. The Wolds are an ancient place where roads follow the lines of Roman Roads. Before the Romans came there were Vikings here; they gave their name to the wonderful long distance walk known as The Viking Way, which very popular with hikers. You can walk it all if you like - from the Humber Bridge to Oakham is 147 miles.
