Places to visit around Suffolk on your Broads holidays
Suffolk is a county full of natural wonders and nature at its best. We’re all more aware now of not just nature itself, but the fact that we have so much to see on our own doorsteps. Carlton Marshes
Open air and wild life are always appealing, and around Carlton Marshes there are lots of places to see. You can follow the footpaths from the park into Carlton Marshes, just head towards the Marina and take a left!
Developed over centuries these fabulous acres of fen, marsh, meadows and pools is testament to how man can manage our environment to maximum advantage. It’s Broadland at its natural best.
Nicholas Everitt Park
Also walking distance from Broadlands Park & Marina (just follow the footpath in the opposite direction!), Nicholas Everitt park at Oulton Broad is a lovely place to wander through and chill out. It’s also where you’ll find the Lowestoft Museum. It’s world famous for its collection of 18th century Lowestoft Porcelain. That really is worth discovering.
At Pets Corner you’ll find chickens and geese, pigs and goats, sheep, ponies and rabbits. It’s pet perfection and one of Oulton Broad’s most popular family attractions.

Somerleyton Hall & Gardens
Gardens galore are here to enjoy! The gardens at Somerleyton are a must. Since the 17th century this glorious place has had spectacular gardens. Nowadays these 12 spectacular acres are being brought up to date, whilst retaining their splendour.
The hall is one of England’s finest stately homes, used as the backdrop in series 4 of The Crown, acting as a double for the Norfolk Royal residence of Sandringham. The hall is a private residence and closed to visitors.
East Anglia Transport Museum
Ding ding. All aboard! With museums in mind, another must visit place is the East Anglia Transport Museum. Located at Carlton Colville, this working museum will take you through the sights and sounds of our transport history. The trams, the trolleybuses, the trains; it’s a joy. And the cafe is pretty good too!
The iconic heather at Dunwich Heath
Dunwich
If history and nature is your thing, then you must do Dunwich. Once, this place was the capital of the East Angles and an international port. Now it’s known as the lost city, with a population of just 120. Take a look at Dunwich Museum while you’re there to find out more.
You must also head to Dunwich Heath & Beach for a beautifully serene landscape.
Aldeburgh
There’s Aldeburgh of course, a town with a huge and rich cultural life and history. It’s home to the Aldeburgh Literary Festival and it’s forever linked to the world famous composer Benjamin Britten and his music. It’s a great place of contrasts.
The beautiful beach is a wonderfully, typically, Suffolk beach. It’s ideal for strolling and skimming stones, but it’s also the location for Maggi Hambling’s inspiring ‘Scallop’ sculpture. The town has its art galleries and museum, but it’s also, most definitely, a traditional Suffolk seaside town.

Southwold
You seriously have to see Southwold. It’s almost impossible to talk about Suffolk without mentioning Southwold and it’s iconic pier, justifiably famous for its charm and tranquillity. And if you’re in Suffolk it’s silly not to see it.
It’s the quintessentially Suffolk coastal town. There are great places to eat, glorious galleries, super shops including lovely independent retailers, the famous lighthouse and, of course, there’s Adnams. The renowned brewery is synonymous with Southwold. You can hike along the beautiful beach or amble along the high street. Either way you’ll be captivated by the magic of Southwold’s famous appeal.
Suffolk Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Throughout this picturesque terrain, one can find the esteemed Suffolk Coast and Heaths as well as the Dedham Vale, both recognized as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Both these areas spread into the East Anglian county of Essex too.
Engaging in a leisurely stroll through the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB is an especially delightful pursuit, offering the optimal means to relish the breathtaking scenery. It stretches from South of Lowestoft all the way down to Felixstowe and beyond, including previously mentioned coastal areas, towns and villages and 3 walking trails.
